CDHA - House of Delegates 2011
Blanca HOD1

I recently had the privilege of attending the CDHA House of Delegates meeting on June 3-5, 2011. It was a busy weekend; I participated in many meetings and activities of the HOD which in turn inspired me to continue being involved with the business side of our dental hygiene profession.  I enjoyed voting for resolutions, voting on the budget items and hearing recommended amendments.  I attended the outgoing president's recognition luncheon, as well as the luncheon for the installation of the incoming president. I also had the opportunity to spend time with Susan Lopez (this year's President Elect!), seeing her enthusiasm, was not only inspiring, but was downright incredible.

2011 HOD Delegates
My roommates during the event were Diane Okubo-Fong and Heather Steich who are both very dynamic
Dental Hygienists and are very committed to our local component SFHDS. Big thanks to Diane Okubo-Fong for posting the minutes to our website, and to Heather for taking on the position of president for our component. In addition, I had a wonderful time getting to know Michael LaFlamme, also from our delegation.

Blanca Susan HOD
While at the House of Delegates, I saw many familiar faces. Juanita Sirva, &
Cindy from SJVC, instructors Ms. McLearan & Mr.Thomas from FCC, as well as many familiar faces from the HOD of 2008.

When I was a student at FCC, I attended the CDHA HOD and it inspired me to become an active member of my local component, so that my voice could be heard and I could make a difference in the profession that I love. My hope for our future is that all RDH's will do the same!  Join their local components, attend the meetings, let their voices be heard.  I am very fortunate to belong to such a wonderful component as the SFDHS, and anyone who knows me, knows how passionate I am about our profession and career path. Together we can continue to make a difference!!

Dear  SF Dental Hygiene Volunteers:

San Francisco Dental Hygiene Society has adopted Mission Neighborhood Health Center which has 3 clinics in the city.  MNHC serves primarily low-income immigrant families who are working hard to have a better life for their families.

Every month (on the second Friday and on the 4th Weds. of the month)  some of our hygienists go out to the clinics (One on Shotwell and 16th Street,  and one near Caesar Chavez and Valencia St.) to volunteer for 3-4  hours to provide dental screening, parent education and fluoride varnish on children age 1 to 2 years old.

We have a Spanish language assistant to help with the paperwork and translation.  All you have to do is show up.  If you might like to volunteer, we need you!  You get great experience, meet interesting people, and have fun, while you help make a lifelong  difference in a young child's health.

Because it is a medical clinic, they do require a volunteer application to be completed in advance. Please call me if you have any questions (Margaret Fisher 415-575-5719).

 Peggy Mission Neighborhood
Many Thanks to Liz Grillo and Gladys Portillo (who volunteers often and everywhere) and Michael Long  and Susan Lopez, who not only volunteer, but who work behind the scenes promoting  the dental hygiene profession and forging links between the SF community and other health care providers in order to prevent dental disease!

Not to forget, Michael La Flamme who recently organized a dental screening at a homeless shelter here in SF and volunteered along with our new SF
president: Heather Steich!!

Fivel Muntian has been spotted frequently providing dental screenings and fluoride varnish at preschools and health fairs, but most noted is he, for teaching quarterly Oral Health for Children classes for Foster Care Parents of high risk children.

Big Thanks to Blanca Pareto, RDH who drives all the way from Marin to volunteer at our Mission Neighborhood Health Center Dental Clinic!  Thanks
Blanca!! Way to go helping out the children of San Francisco!!!

SF Dental Hygienists DO GOOD WORK!!  MANY MANY THANKS to all the great dental volunteers in SF!!

Sincerely,

Margaret Fisher, R.D.H.A.P., B.S.
